Project manager for copyright campaigns in Europe

epicenter.works defends civil liberties in the digital age, and is committed to a free and open internet. Our main goal is to uphold the fundamental rights to privacy and freedom of speech in the internet. All of our work is closely tied to the legislative process in the European Union and several member states. In our work, we combine detailed policy analysis with public campaigning and strategic litigation, which is consequently informed by the details of every dossier we work on, but also aims to inform and engage the general public in the political debate. We organised campaigns for net neutrality protections, against government spyware, against data retention and most recently against upload filters.

After following the EU copyright directive closely from 2016 till 2019, we want to continue our work to protect fundamental rights in the implementation of this directive in national legislation. Therefore, we are looking for a new hire to help in this crucial EU-wide action. The main role will be in collaboration with a wide network of national stakeholders to educate and mobilize citizens and put pressure on national legislators.

Key requirements:

  • Perfect English spoken and written (native speaker preferred, additional EU languages are advantageous)
  • Comfortable with keeping an overview of and coordinating all relevant stakeholders in the 28 EU member states
  • Political thinking and strategic action
  • Regular travel in Europe expected (around once per month)
  • Team player and communicative personality 
  • Ideally previous experience with digital rights or pan-European campaigns 
  • Ideally web development skills (HTML, JS, CSS) or experience with graphic design
  • Ideally knowledge of the European copyright framework and actors
  • Location: Vienna

Other tasks of this role include:

  • Public Speaking on stage and in the media 
  • Engaging with national stakeholders to foster their engagement in this dossier
  • Supporting our communications team (social media, website/blog, newsletter and press)
  • Connecting with volunteers in your daily work

Working hours:

20 to 38.5 hours per week depending on qualification. Flexibility from regular employment to freelance. This position is limited until May 2020, extension is possible. Start date is beginning of January 2020.
 
Following Austrian labor law, we publish the expected salary for this role. At 38.5 hours per week, it amounts to € 2.130,- monthly (payable 14 times a year) incl. taxes and social security charges (Bruttogehalt), subject to negotiation.

Internship

We are a professional citizens' rights organisation and we offer relevant and ambitious tasks with the aim to give the necessary weight to freedom rights in the current political debate. Our office is in the centre of Vienna and we are working close to the legislative process in Austria and Europe. In our young and diverse team you will find opportunities to help topics like privacy, freedom of expression and assembly, data protection, and net neutrality achieve a break through. The internship can be adapted to fit the applicant topic-wise as well as duration-wise. It is important that you show a profound interest in basic and freedom rights, in technical subjects, and in involvement of the civil society.

Tasks and responsibilities

You can choose your tasks according to your interests, preferences, and skills; for example media observation, monitoring of parliamentary processes (Austria and EU), research, composition of articles and flyers, graphic design for information material, website maintenance, organisation of events, participation in campaigns and actions, etc.

The office of epicenter.works is in Vienna, 1090, Widerhofergasse 8/2/ Top 4.

Framework conditions

Internship positions are created as needed. The duration of the employment is variable with a minimum of one month. You work part-time for 12 h per week. As a non-profit organisation funded by donations, the payment is limited to EUR 425,- (Geringfügigkeitsgrenze), plus travelling expenses and per diems.

Volunteer position: Web developer

We are at home on the internet and for this reason there is always a lot to do there. Our association maintains several websites for campaigns, projects, and helpful activities. For this we increasingly need capable and motivated people who can implement good ideas in HTML, CSS, and (if possible) JavaScript.

Skills and requirements

  • Web development HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • A basic intuition for graphic design
  • Understanding of logic processes
  • Basic skills in Git and Github
  • Studious and solution-oriented work
  • High level of self-motivation

Volunteer position: Graphic designer

Without a proper graphical presentation, complex juristical or technical topics are difficult to convey to a broad audience. For this reason, our association continuously works on websites, prints, informational graphics, memes, and signs and banners for demonstrations. The major part of these graphics is created by volunteer and honorary workers. Often there are concurrent political events that require immediate action. For this reason we want to expand our graphics-team. We promise that your works will receive as much publicity as possible and a political impact.

Skills and requirements

  • Experiences in graphic design (university students, pupils at schools for graphic design, self-employed professionals or talented laymen)
  • Inclination and motivation to steer the political decision process towards respecting the basic rights
  • Willingness to every now and then complete tasks on short notice and to develop creative implementations
  • Licences for common image processing software or the capability to use open source alternatives
  • Experience in the application and further development of Corporate Design
